In view of the critical importance of software asset management, common standards and methods are essential. Moreover, commonly recognized standards and methods free enterprises and organizations from the task of creating their own in-house systems for software asset management.

The Software Asset Management Consortium identifies the best practices in software asset management and supports the effective use of software assets for IT governance. As part of this effort, the Consortium has established and publishes a software asset-management guideline entitled Software Asset Management Standards (Version 1.0).
